Will Hrithik Team Up With Channel V Anchor In Basu's Film?

The hunt for Hrithik Roshan's leading lady in his next home production is getting more intense. The latest to be checked out by director Anurag Basu is Channel V anchor Bruna Abdullah.

Bruna, with an Arab mother and Brazilian father, has stationed herself in Mumbai waiting for a break in Bollywood. She performed an extremely bold item song for Anubhav Sinha's 'Cash' recently.

'Bruna has her eyes set on Bollywood. Sinha's item song was her stepping-stone. Basu's film with Hrithik is her next big move,' said a close friend of the Arabian-Brazilian VJ-dancer.

'Bruna is extremely uninhibited before the camera. That's why she was brought into Channel V which needed a girl to rival the international looks, personality and body language of MTV VJ Mia,' added the friend.

However, Basu denies Bruna has been pencilled in for the Hrithik project.

He told IANS: 'I don't deny meeting her, like we've met so many other girls for the part. But Bruna hasn't been finalised. But it'll surely be an international face.'

'It'll be a Spanish speaking girl. We want to show love has no barriers,' added Rakesh Roshan who is producing the yet-untitled thriller.

Several names have been put forward. Apparently, Rakesh Roshan, who is very close to Anil Kapoor and quite fond of Anil's daughter Sonam, wanted to cast her.

Sonam, conscious of her conservative image, begged off because the role requires the girl to get seriously sexy with Hrithik.

'I'd love to work with Sonam, but not on this project. The role doesn't do justice to her. We're looking at someone from abroad, someone Latin American or Brazilian. So, yeah, in that sense this would be my first international project,' said Hrithik.

Basu confirms that the role is quite bold.

'We've looked at many names, known and new in Bollywood. But that 'it' factor eludes us. I'm getting quite jittery. The girl's role is extremely bold. Actually, we've decided to cast someone international, preferably Brazilian, because that's the personality and profile of the leading lady in my film.'

NEWSMAKER: Shah Rukh Khan

King
Khan can be back at the cricket crease — without any controversies —
this time round. Last year, the Bollywood badshah made headlines when
he hugged the Men in Blue under the full glare of TV cameras after
India had won the ICC Twenty20 World Cup.

There were murmurs
that he was doing it for some free publicity for his mega-budget movie
Om Shanti Om. The superstar had vowed then that he would no longer
watch a cricket match.

But Shah Rukh Khan need not be
apologetic any longer to go to a cricket match. For, he has, what some
say, paid an obscene sum to buy the Kolkata team franchisee rights of
the Indian Premier League (IPL) — promoted by the Board of Control for
Cricket in India (BCCI). His co-promoters in the $75.09-million deal
were his long-time friends — actor Juhi Chawla and filmmaker Jay Mehta.

The BCCI’s first shot with the Twenty20 format in India is an
uncharted territory for Shah Rukh, who has been dabbling with a few
roles in the Bollywood space — from being a theatre artist to TV actor,
filmstar to producer, TV host, and now the owner of an IPL cricket
team.

King Khan started his career with theatre and made his
first broadcast appearance through a television soap Fauji, and later
with Circus, both aired on Doordarshan.

While he is often rated
as the best actor in the Indian film industry, his stint as a producer
has been disappointing with just three hits of the seven films he has
produced.

In 2000, he produced his first Hindi movie Phir Bhi
Dil Hai Hindustani with Juhi Chawla under their production banner
Dreamz Unlimited.

The film bombed at the box office, followed
by another flop Asoka, a big-budget period film based on the emperor,
in 2001. The only hit Dreamz Unlimited delivered was in 2003, Chalte
Chalte, which featured Rani Mukherjee opposite Khan.

Shah Rukh
formed yet another film production house — Red Chillies Entertainment
—and the film company churned Main Hoon Na in 2004, which was an
instant hit. However, the two films that followed — Kaal and Paheli —
in 2005 weren’t crowd pullers.

Two years later, King Khan
struck gold by being the first Bollywood producer to have recovered and
made profit even before the release of his film Om Shanti Om.

The
film, with a budget of Rs 35 crore, starred Khan and newcomer Deepika
Padukone, and was sold to Eros International for a whopping Rs 74
crore, according to industry sources.

This apart, Shah Rukh
earned another Rs 10 crore approximately from the sale of music rights
to T-Series. If that wasn’t enough, Om Shanti Om was the first film to
have released its entire music album digitally across platforms for
full song downloads (mobile, online and digital media including
i-Tunes) across 23 countries.

London Dreams might be revived soon…

/photo.cms?msid=2745135 Rajkumar Santoshi is infamous for announcing big projects and then shelving them. But this time however, things seem to be flowing in the reverse order since Santoshi is planning to revive a shelved project of his. The film in question is the ambitious musical London Dreams that Santoshi had launched a couple of years back starring Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan in lead roles.

However, soon after a few scenes were shot on Salman Khan in the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the film was shelved due to some financial problems between the producer and the director.

Sources inform that Eros International had acquired the film for a record price of Rs 40 crores. On learning this Santoshi, who was signed as a director for a fee of Rs 3.5 crores, raised his remuneration to Rs 8 crores. But reportedly producer Param Jeet Singh met with a financial crisis and couldn’t match Santoshi’s price. So the film got shelved.

Now sources inform that Singh is keen to revive the project. Reportedly the producer even met lead actor Salman Khan at his Panvel farmhouse and expressed his desire to revive London Dreams . He also informed Salman that he had to sell his two bungalows to repay his financers. Salman who is known for his kind nature, immediately called Rajkumar Santoshi to revive the project. Now it is believed that Salman is willing to fund for London Dreams as the producer is going through financial problems.

Meanwhile Santoshi who was supposed to make Ashoka with Ajay Devgan and Bipasha Basu seems to be facing problems with respect to that project since his deal with PVR Pictures has apparently fallen through. Now Santoshi is looking out for a new producer to back him. He recently shelved one more film.

Since there is no film in Santoshi’s hand presently, sources claims that he may revive London Dreams soon and might start shooting sometime this year. While Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan are still the choice for the lead roles, there might be changes in the remaining star cast as the makers have to check with the availability of the stars.

London Dreams is about a rock band in England. Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan were supposed to play childhood friends in the movie who are musicians. The film is supposedly loosely inspired from the Hollywood musical Amadeus . Just last year Suneel Darshan too remade Amadeus as Shakalaka Boom Boom starring Bobby Deol and Upen Patel as contending musicians.

Akshay : Chandni Chowk to Bollywood

/photo.cms?msid=2745254
You can take a guy out of Chandni Chowk but you can’t take Chandni Chowk out of him. If you really want to check the veracity of that claim, try Akshay Kumar.

The moment that oh-so-suave filmstar veneer slips just a little bit, the Chandni Chowk ka munda is clearly obvious. And now that he is here in Delhi, shooting for his “autobiographical movie” Chandni Chowk to China, the guy cannot be happier.

“There is but a little twist, my real life moved towards Bollywood rather than China,” says the actor with a hearty laugh as he gets ready to give us an exclusive picture of his new look. In case you missed, ‘India’s sexiest Dad’ is sporting a bodhi, a paunch and an uncouth attitude in the film. “That’s my look in the film. And I want you to click me in front of the Old Fort like I own it... like how every tourist gets his pictures clicked here,” he says.

That done to his and our satisfaction, he is back to Chandni Chowk – his favourite topic. “I was born in Paranthewali Gali and I remember all of it vividly... Sheeshganj Gurudwara, Gyaan di Kulfi and the food you get here! People even have a different way of talking here with all that ‘ Haan, sun be oye’ ,” he laughs, “In fact, I plan to take the entire crew and cast to Chandni Chowk and treat them to the food here.”

Now, that will be a nice break for the actor who has been kept busy this year by hit films and award shows. “Life is progressing much better than I had expected it to. And I am enjoying every bit of it. I am not the kinds to crib that I have go to work again today. Instead, I can’t wait to get started everyday. I have this fixed schedule: I do my workout, I drop my son to school, I go to work and I then spend time with my family,” Akki says.

But he is not the all-work-and-no-play kinds either. “I take a break every three months and go for a break wherever my wife wants to. This time she wanted to go for a cruise. My family never stays away from me. My wife has joined me in Delhi and we will be going to China together too. Every place is just a flight away,” he says.

Flying high sure comes easy to Akki. And don’t expect the man to be too modest about his success either. “I am happy to know that last year I did a business of Rs 531 crore through my movies. No solo actor has ever done this kind of business. I am glad that my filmmakers get to make profitable movies through me and that keeps me going,” he smiles.

A more business-savvy Preity turns 33

Preity Zinta, the vivacious, dimple-cheeked Bollywood star, celebrates her 33rd birthday on Thursday with greater confidence in her abilities and demonstrating a little known business acumen with the recent bagging of the franchise of the Mohali team in cricket's Indian Premier League.

Preity would have had a big do to mark the occasion had her professional commitments not come in the way, according to a source close to her.

However, she has ensured that the 'big day' in her life is not all work and no play. She will celebrate, but it will be a quiet one. Who are included in her private party's guest list is also kept under wraps to avoid media scrutiny.

One person who will stand beside Preity to cheer her and sing "Happy Birthday To Dear Preity" the loudest will be her beau, Ness Wadia, the scion of the Wadia family who runs Bombay Dyeing.

Professionally, after a decade in the industry, Preity is now bold enough to tread on uncharted territories with a rare confidence to ensure that she carves her own niche in Bollywood -- of course, with an eye on Hollywood.

Indeed, she has accepted the challenge of movies like Deepa Mehta's forthcoming venture, Heaven On Earth, and Jahnu Barua's Har Pal, movies that are far away from Bollywood's commercial standards.

In both the movies, due for release in the first half of 2008, Preity will surprise her fans and audiences alike, portraying far less glamorous roles than she has ever played in the past.

In these movies, she plays the roles of women who are psychologically troubled due to family reasons but come to terms with their respective situations in a mature way and finally emerge victorious.

The two movies will present her in an image that is absolutely different from the bubbly image the mainstream Bollywood movies have given her, Bollywood circles explained.

Preity has decided to walk on a terrain, which has nothing to do with movies, but everything to do with glamour.

Yes, from a gentlemen's game, cricket has become a glamour sport of late. And Preity, along with Shah Rukh Khan, provided oodles of it when the two won the IPL franchise to sponsor two important cricketing teams.

Glamour of cricket and de-glamorised roles in movies - is this the beginning of metamorphoses 2008 that Preity is experimenting with?

More important, will it lead her to new heights?

Bollywood box-office report of the week

view SUNDAY movie stills

The only new release of the coming Friday is going to be Oracle Entertainment's RAMA RAMA KYA HAI DRAMAA. Directed by Chandrakant Singh and featuring Rati Agnihotri, Anupam Kher, Neha Dhupia, Amrita Arora, Aashish Chaudhary and Rajpal Yadav, the film may appeal at the small centres and select cinemas of Bombay.

Last Friday's Rohit Shetty directed Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan and Ayesha Takia starrer, SUNDAY, disappointed with its opening. The film which was expected to give the Hindi film industry its first success of the year, got off to a dull start in Bombay and its opening was weak almost everywhere. Though there was some pick-up noticed in Bombay as the weekend progressed ( to an extent in Delhi city also), it was not very significant or pronounced. However, SUNDAY managed to gross a reasonable $161,059 from the UK during the opening weekend, which is more than what Devgan's last film HALLA BOL earned till date.

The first week of Nagesh Kukunoor's Shreyas Talpade starrer BOMBAY TO BANGKOK proved to be a horrendous journey for all concerned, as the movie had dismal collections to show. Checking out the actual reported numbers, BOMBAY TO BANGKOK collected 50 lakhs from Bombay, 8.25 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 20 lakhs from Delhi city, 4.20 lakhs from Noida, 5 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 2.30 lakhs from Lucknow, 3.70 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.85 lakhs from Faridabad, 2.25 lakhs from Indore, 1.55 lakhs from Jaipur, 10 lakhs from Calcutta and 6.65 lakhs from Hyderabad. Netting a poor 1.60 crores in its first week from India, BOMBAY TO BANGKOK is an unquestionable flop.

After a disappointing opening week, Rajkumar Santoshi's Pankaj Kapur, Ajay Devgan and Vidya Balan starrer, HALLA BOL crashed totally. The movie collected 38.50 lakhs from Bombay, 15 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.55 lakhs from Jamnagar, 1 lakh (gross) from Bhavnagar, 3.60 lakhs from Rajkot, 1.30 lakhs from Nasik, 36 lakhs from Delhi city, 5 lakhs from Noida, 6.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 5.50 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.20 lakhs from Agra, 1 lakh from Dehradun, 1.40 lakhs from Meerut, 1.25 lakhs from Aligarh, 5.20 lakhs from Gurgaon, 1.30 lakhs from Faridabad, 1.30 lakhs from Nagpur, 2.25 lakhs from Indore, 8.30 lakhs from Jaipur, 7.30 lakhs from Hyderabad and 1.15 lakhs from Vijaywada. With another 3.50 crores, HALLA BOL has so far netted 14 crores in two weeks from India. The Abdol Samee Siddiqui produced HALLA BOL is now a major flop of 2008, though the real losers are the worldwide distributors, Pyramid Saimira. The Santoshi-Devgan project has also been rejected in the UK, grossing just $156,525.

With the 2008 releases failing to attract the audiences, it augurs well for older films like Anees Bazmee's WELCOME. The film manages to collect 33 lakhs from Bombay, 12.25 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 3 lakhs from Rajkot, 1.50 lakhs from Jamnagar, 1 lakh each from Bhavnagar and Nasik, 1.40 lakhs from Solapur, 20.50 lakhs from Delhi city, 2 lakhs from Noida, 5.40 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 5 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.25 lakhs from Agra, 1.25 lakhs each from

Adding another 2.75 crores, WELCOME has so far netted 72.50 crores in five weeks from India. The Feroze, Anil, Nana, Akshay and Katrina starrer is a blockbuster hit in India, given its distribution price (including cost of print and publicity). In the Overseas, Firoz Nadidadwala's WELCOME is already a superhit, grossing $1,762,418 in the UK and over $ 1 million (as per Studio 18) though the US numbers have not been audited / validated.

Let us now checkout the performance of another release from last year, Aamir Khan's TAARE ZAMEEN PAR. The film continues its rock steady run! Checking out the fifth week numbers, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR collected 97 lakhs from Bombay, 23 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.75 lakhs from Rajkot, 1.50 lakhs from Jamnagar, 1.35 lakhs (gross) from Bhavnagar, 4.10 lakhs Nasik, 66 lakhs from Delhi city, 7.50 lakhs from Noida, 8.50 lakhs from Ghaziabad, 6 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.15 lakhs from Agra, 1.85 lakhs from Meerut, 1.10 lakhs from Moradabad, 8.60 lakhs from Gurgaon, 3.75 lakhs from Faridabad, 10.30 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.05

With another 5.50 crores during its latest outing, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR has netted an impressive 51.50 crores in five weeks from India. The Darsheel, Aamir and Tisca starrer is almost a blockbuster from India, based on its release cost (including that for price and publicity). TAARE ZAMEEN PAR has done very well in the US, grossing $1,215,707 but has underperformed in the UK with a gross of $663,362. But given the overall collections in the overseas circuit, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is a hit there.

In the end, let us once again checkout Farah Khan's OM SHANTI OM. The movie increased its reported centres total in the eleventh week, as compared to the tenth, netting around 8 lakhs! The all India total now stands at close to 86.25 crores. The Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Rampal, Shreyas Talpade and Deepika Padukone starrer, OM SHANTI OM, an ATBB (All time blockbuster) in India, is also a blockbuster in the Overseas, grossing

Fardeen Khan: Headed for rehab

Image for Fardeen Khan: Headed for rehab

Fardeen Khan was given two hard choices by the Mumbai courts with regard to his seven-year-old drug case – to serve a jail sentence for six months or go for a drug detoxification programme. And the young star chose the latter.

But the story doesn’t end here; the actor has to prove to the authorities that he has admitted himself to a rehab centre and kicked the habit. But even before all this happens Fardeen has to file an appeal and pray that the court grants him his choice.

Though going to a rehab centre is a common occurrence in Hollywood, Fardeen will become the first Bollywood star to be officially sentenced to a detox programme.

Fardeen was arrested in 2001 when he was caught red-handed buying cocaine in Juhu, a Mumbai suburb. Since then, the actor has been out on bail. But things have changed since he was first charged. The court dismissed charges against him for dealing in drugs and he now faces charges only for consumption of drugs.

The whole episode has been a nightmare for the young actor. In fact, so paranoid was Fardeen about attending the hearing that he once lied to the court that he had lost his passport while travelling to the US. He thought that by doing so he could skip the court date.

The public prosecutor, however, has said that the star had been given preferential treatment in the case.

Salman and Ajay in 'London Dreams'

http://www.salmankhan.net/images/forthcoming/london-dreams/sal2.jpgFilmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi is set to begin production of the grand musical "London Dreams" this year and the real surprise of the project is Salman Khan.

Santoshi said: "'London Dreams' will come in the middle of the year. So I wouldn't like to say much about it right now. But yes, Ajay Devgan and Salman Khan have been signed for it. And A.R. Rahman will do the music."

Ajay is of course is widely considered Santoshi's resident hero.

But some years ago, Santoshi and Salman had teamed up for the comedy "Andaz Apna Apna".

Salman, currently on a signing spree, has agreed to work in new films to be made by Nikhil Advani and Samir Karnik, among others.

"London Dreams" is unlike any film Santoshi has made before.

Moving away from the gut-wrenching trademark action of his films like "Ghayal" and "Lajja", the new movie is based in London and will delineate the life and times of those associated with the Asian underground music scene.

It will chart the rise and fall of an Indi-Rock band, with A.R. Rahman providing the global sounds for this unorthodox Bollywood musical.

The film could be Santoshi's most expensive film to date, as it will try to replicate the flamboyance of Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge".

Salman Khan to enter into wedlock in 2008

Bollywood’s most eligible bachelor Salman Khan is all set to tie the knot this year.

According to our sources, Bollywood’s spoilt boy Sallu has finally decided to give up his bachelor status and settle down. It’s said that the actor has given in to the demands of his parents, who want their son to marry and start a family as soon as possible.

Salman, who has been seeing British born Indian actress Katrina Kaif for years now, seems to have found his soul mate in her. After having had a strings of affairs with numerous models and actresses including the infamous one with Aishwarya Rai, it’s Katrina who got the star thinking of ‘the final commitment’.

Though the actress who stood by Salman during his short-lived jail term in the Blackbuck case has openly said that she has no plans for marriage in the near future, Sallu’s decision to settle down might cause her to have second thoughts on the subject.

After all, it’s not easy to convince Sallu to settle down into dreary ways of matrimony!

Shaadi mein to abhi 5-6 saal hain

Kareena has been flashing a huge diamond ring on her hand for a while now which led to the speculation of her marriage with Saif Ali Khan. Obviously the love smitten couple gave enough fodder to the gossipmongers over the weekend.

Kareena, unlike Saif, had been keeping mum about the affection she felt for him, finally decided to put a full stop on wild gossip of her marrying the star.

Ending weeks of speculations of her marrying Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor said that wedding bells can wait for 5 to 6 years, she is not in a hurry for any decision.

“Shaadi mein to abhi 5-6 saal hain" said Bebo told media persons today.

The actress, who was earlier involved with Shahid Kapoor, has however made no secrets of her relationship with Chote Nawab.

The love that blossomed on the sets of their upcoming film ‘Tashan’ matured into an affair to watch out for when the Prince of Pataudi decided to wear his heart on his sleeve. The famous tattoo "Kareena" on Saif’s arm was followed by a dazzling diamond ring on Bebo’s ring finger, sparking rumours that the two were engaged.

Our sources tell us that it is her mother Babita, who is holding Kareena back from making any commitments.

For Saif, its his third serious affair after ex-wife Amrita Singh and Italian girlfriend Rozza Catalano.

The Arrogance:
Shah Rukh would return home at nine every night, after taking part in elocution, exhibitions, or rehearsing. Later at night he would play Cricket under the street lamp. He would study at the last minute as he had a good memory. At college he was quite lost as he came from a sophisticated school. But he wasn’t a pseudo guy with an accent like most guys from St. Columbia’s get. He admits that he learnt to be arrogant because of the atmosphere in school. He had it for 13 years in school. That amount of arrogance he says is good. Then that attitude continued at Stephens College, which he left after a year. He then joined Hansraj College.

Any Girlfriends at College? He had very good friends but never affairs. He would sit with girls. Some would help him write his notes like Usha and Anju Shah. He never sat with a girl and chatted with her. He was always in a gang. Coming from a segregated school, his relationship with girls had always been from a distance. St. Columbia made him a sort of Dennis the Menace, where falling in love was stupid-macho men don’t fall in love.

Katrina Kaif is a 'pill popper'

According to a chemist, Katrina Kaif is highly paranoid about falling ill or catching an infection. So what does she do?

Well, Kat takes pills to avoid allergies and reactions, since she feels she's susceptible to falling ill.

That's not all, We're also told that her skin is very sensitive and stomach is a bit delicate about certain foods.. and Kat also carries her own drinking water, apart from her huge box of various capsules and tablets.

By the way, her maid too has imbibed Kat's medical gyaan.. and proudly advises people on which pill to pop in when and under what symptoms.

Wonder if she has any pill for Salman Khan when he gets hyper and throws tantrums left, right and centre. Or shouldn't we ask?

BCCI is doing the right. We Indians have never been racist so why should one of our players be termed a racist. I hope Ponting, Michael Clarke and Symonds don't get a chance to play in IPL.

Darsheel Safary is best newcomer of the year!

tzpl21 (Small) taarezameenpar7 (Small)

Darsheel Safary is not an ordinary name anymore. This 11 year old kid has become very famous among everyone after the release of Taare Zameen Par . He is not only receiving calls complementing his performance but also lot of attention these days.

Darsheel’s performance in the film has aroused such response that a trade magazine has nominated him in the best newcomer male category as a strong contender of Ranbir Kapoor.

A close friend informs that after the release of TZP Darsheel has been receiving lot of appreciation for the role of Isshan Awasthi. “Darsheel is so famous among the kids that wherever he goes they call him by his screen name. He has been busy in preparing for exams as he missed his studies while shooting of TZP and now he has to give tests every week.”

“Post TZP Darsheel’s concentration is on his studies he wants to compensate the time that he spent for shooting.” says a friend close to his family. “Darsheel is getting more offers for commercials and films and it is really a tough task for his mother to keep him away from things that may distract his mind now.” adds a source.

It can be recalled that in an interview Aamir had said that Darsheel shouldn’t expose himself by doing more films. He should wait till he grows up and then take acting if he wants to become an actor. Otherwise he will lose his charm. Seems Darsheel’s parents are seriously thinking about Aamir’s advice.

The Boy Who Made LK Advani Cry

Taare Zameen Par’s child star Darsheel Safary’s is being mobbed, mobbed, mobbed. His parents are struggling to keep the mob at bay. NISHA SUSAN catches the family in a curious moment

AT THIS stage, one is losing count of the many unlikely people who have cried during Taare Zameen Par. Even if you begin watching it with grim determination to not cry, fifteen minutes in, you feel your face crumpling. Ishaan Awasthi taps into our purest, shallowest lode of tears, prodding at our collective sense of an unloved childhood. Darsheel Safary the ten-year-old who played Ishaan is cut from very different cloth. But he gives rise to as much speculation about the nature of childhood as Ishaan does. “I have heard the kid is spoilt now,” say even the most kindly, disinclined- -to-gossip adults. So when the first thing you see at Darsheel’s South Mumbai home is his aunt and cousin watching him on the news, it is not as surreal as it could have been.

Ten minutes later, Darsheel returns from school with his mother and younger sister. He is the quintessential schoolboy, jaunty even under a huge schoolbag. The living room suddenly seems awash with children. Darsheel’s five-year-old sister, Nejvi and cousin, Priyanj are big contenders in the cuteness stakes, make coy advance-and-retreat motions with susceptible adults. Priyanj inadvertantly mocks camera-happy parents as he stalks protesting adults, photographing them with his mother’s cellphone. Darsheel, the boy who made LK Advani cry, is only cute for professional requirements, timing a split-second- long wistful smile for the camera, then returning to whatever he is fiddling with or dangling from. The interview is a mild, unavoidable nuisance.

The young woman from the PR company, Anita (name changed) comes in. Why should one be surprised that Darsheel, like the rest of the cast of TZP, is handled by a PR company? By his own count, Darsheel has given 30-odd interviews so far. Mitesh and Sheetal Safary, his parents, have consistently refused to be interviewed. Anita is the one who set up this meeting and who said, on behalf of the harried Safarys, that they will not speak to the media. By now, she is on fairly chummy terms with Darsheel and is inclined to tease him and offer ice-cream.

On this particular day the Safarys are more than ordinarily grateful for Anita’s presence. Mitesh, a jeweller, is out of town and Sheetal must deal with the media. The phone rings continuously because of the ‘controversy.’ The day before, Darsheel received the Star Screen award for Best Child Actor and was reported as saying he wanted the Best Actor award (the one Shah Rukh Khan took home.) His actual statement became inconsequential as the media pounced. It was time for the childactor- gone-bad piece to be trotted out.

One Gujarati paper reported, in the knowing manner of a wealthy aunt, that the Safarys, once average Gujaratis, were now too big for their boots. No acknowledgement that a child’s casual response to getting a shiny award might have been blown out of proportion, rendering even this attempt to interview him into an absurdity.

Sheetal Safary may not have wanted any more press for her son, but she did want him fed, dressed and ready for the tutor who was arriving shortly. She and Anita join forces to expedite this interview. Darsheel is already irritated. In school some of the older kids had taunted him, “Oh, you want to become Shah Rukh now? You think you are Shah Rukh?” He had got away with his dignity intact but is feeling mulish now. His school has decided to organise a felicitation ceremony for him that evening but he is disincline to court more trouble. “I don’t want to go for the function,” he says. But Sheetal thinks he should attend.

Source by tehelka.com
“Write this down,” Darsheel instructs. “I hate girls pinching my cheeks.” Every interviewer has heard this. Is he getting harassed at school? “Yes, all the time,” he says with the ease of a well-protected child. His classmates are “cool”; it is the rest of the school he is irritated with. “I am mobbed, mobbed, mobbed.” He proceeds to describe “running from the mobs” which involved racing from floor to floor of the school much like an old-fashioned video game character. He warms to this tale and would have gone on, except that his mother and Anita are yelling to get on with the interview and eat something. In fits and bursts, Darsheel says 300 is much better than Beowulf, Roald Dahl is good. Harry Potter is boring. He likes Hrithik Roshan better than Aamir Khan, but by now, a month after TZP’s release, Mumbai taxi drivers could tell you that.

There are parallels between the bizarre questions one asks adult celebrities and those that long-suffering children are asked by adults: What is your favourite food, favourite colour? Do you like your mother better or your father? One prepares to ask these questions of Darsheel and finds it an unnerving process. There are the big eyes and the gloriously askew teeth, the basis of our intimacy with him. Though the skinny little boy’s body is occupied by a skinny little boy, his restlessness, his under-the-eyelash assessing glance at adults, his quick cheek, all now hold greater import than that of other little boys.

HE SAYS he did not study much while on the film sets. Watchful Anita sitting on the next couch interrupts. “Don’t lie. Didn’t you have a tutor?” Darsheel brightens. Here is a duel for him to enter. “No, no, no.” Some lukewarm name-calling later, he returns to the interview. Earlier he said he had joined the Shiamak Dawar dance classes (where he was ‘discovered’) when he was four. His aunt jumped in to say that he’d been six. Four, said Darsheel. Six, said his aunt. This casual disagreement under the eye of a reporter ruffles his aunt and she stops talking. Sensing her upset, Darsheel is quick to grin and concede.

Suddenly one sees Darsheel the actor, who dug around in the experiences of his short lifetime to bring to the screen a vulnerable, sensitive child very different from his sturdy, self-assured self. Unlike Ishaan who looked to older brother Yohaan for protection, first-born Darsheel treats his siblings with lordly kindness. He tucks Nejvi and Priyanj under his arms grandly and asks the photographer to take a picture. He asks adults riddles and wants to know if their inability to answer is because of stupidity or dyslexia. He drives his mother to the edge and then settles down to do what she needs him to. What was it now? An interview, tuitions, a meal, a change of clothes? Sure.

DVD review: No Smoking

MOVIE DETAILS

Cast: John Abraham, Ayesha Takia, Paresh Rawal, Ranvir Shorey
Director: Anurag Kashyap
Producer: Kumar Mangat and Vishal Bhardwaj
Music: Vishal Bhardwaj
Lyrics: Gulzar

THE FILM

Before No Smoking came, it was Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, which was being termed as the worst movie of 2007. And then came No Smoking, and the focus shifted on Anurag Kashyap for this John Abraham starrer which hardly a soul understood. The film would have probably worn the crown for being the most severely criticized movie of the year but then Saawariya came a few weeks down the line followed by Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and No Smoking had a much larger competition to fight for the place up there!

No Smoking is bizarre, no doubt about that, but unlike other films in the 'Hall of fame (shame?)' as mentioned above, this one actually deserves a second dekko. Reason? While Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag to Saawariya to Laaga Chunari Mein Daag bored, this made one look at the screen in disbelief and utter astonishment. While it is near to impossible to watch any of them the second time round, No Smoking actually entices you to give it a try again. That's because it has multiple layers with an abstract narrative, that can be caught only when the film is given a watch multiple number of points.

In the hindsight, Anurag's intentions were right to begin with. He wanted to make cinema which breaks all norms. Perfectly fine at that. He wanted to present visuals as never seen before. Correct again. And he very much succeeded too in most part of the film. He wanted to tell a tale which doesn't quite belong to this world. No problems, as it's good for an attempt. But then the issue was with the narrative which wasn't in sync with the grasping power of an average audience. It was always 5 steps ahead at every point in the narrative and this is where No Smoking went over the head of the majority.

PACKAGING

One has to give it to No Smoking for coming out with one of the most stylish cover layout. Striking and intriguing, the picture of John Abraham smoking with stills from the film around him does catch one's attention. Packaged in a sleek thick paper cum plastic case, the DVD inlay also has a picture of John baring his body with his signature on it. What also impresses is the text which is revealed once you pick up the DVD. It is that of a scary agreement which John signed with Paresh Rawal in his endeavor to quit smoking. Those who have watched the film already would be able to relate to each and every word of the text here!

DURATION

The film comes in a single DVD pack. While the film's duration is 121 minutes, there are also 17 minutes of special features.

SPECIAL FEATURES

To one's disappointment, the only special features along with the DVD are the making of two songs 'Jab Bhi Cigarette Jalti Hai' and 'Phoonk De'.

The 17 minutes which follow are dedicated to the making of songs and feature interviews from Vishal Bhardwaj, Anurag Kashyap, Kumar Mangat, Rekha Bhardwaj and Ashley Lobo (choreographer). Stories around how Gulzar saab suggested inclusion of 'Jab Bhi Cigarette' in the narrative and how Ashley Lobo was given a free hand by Anurag to choreograph the song and how 'Phoonk De' was included as a celebration of success of 'Namak Issak Ka' - Omkara (which featured the team of Vishal, Rekha and choreographer Ganesh Acharya) are told to the audience, but the question is, is anyone really interested to know all of this?

For a film which was easily the most criticized of the year gone by (mainly negative) at least in Indian media, one expected Anurag Kashyap to grab the opportunity and talk about this movie in the DVD. After all, majority had concurred that the film didn't work mainly because no one could understand the thought, the concept, the narrative and scenes of No Smoking. On the other hand, Anurag Kashyap did maintain that he had his reasons for making this film and even John Abraham had agreed to the fact that, for him, understanding the film in its entirety was never an issue.

This is why, as a viewer, you tend to expect at least one of them to be talking about their film in defense. You never know a simplistic point of view about the film may have actually managed to make sense with the audience and propelled the sales of the DVD further. Hence, it comes as a rude shock to see the DVD only being centered on making of the songs - an area which is easily the last thing that would interest a viewer in understanding about the film.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

- 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen format
- Subtitles In English
- 5.1 Dolby Digital & Stereo
- Mastered from High Definition (HD)

CONCLUSION

No, I am not claiming that I understood the film in entirety when I saw in the second time on DVD. But there are some elements which does come to fore. However, yet again, for a viewer to do so it is again at his/her own risk, because it requires a patient (read 'very patient') viewing, to sit through the film again. Also, one has to be a hardcore movie lover to 'aim' at understanding a particular style of cinema when there are lot many movies around us which are easy to watch, simple to understand and take us into a far more comfortable hardcore entertainment!

Kareena Kapoor: Fiery elegance at press event in Mumbai

29 January 2008 (Sawf News) - Kareena Kapoor who has already bagged awards this year for her spirited performance as Geet in Jab We Met and is a strong favorite for the Filmfare Best Actress award released the latest issue of the magazine at Vie Lounge, Juhu, Mumbai, Monday, January 28.

The issue features Kareena on its cover page in an intriguing pose wearing a bare shoulder dress.

Kareena, a fine actress, was always confident, arrogant some would say, and remained so when she was down and almost out, rattled by one flop after another.

With success and recognition finally coming her way she appears to have toned down the stridency in her demeanor. At the event she was at ease fielding awkward and personal questions, most of them Saif centric, without giving an inch away.

The issue of Filmfare that she released carries an interview in which she answers a lot of the question thrown at her and at one point she politely suggested that journalists read the issue.

Talking of Saif, he dropped her at the event yesterday as you can see in our exclusive photo. However, he left immediately afterwards.

Kareena was casually attired in dark blue skinny jeans, a red top and a chocolate brown suede jacket.

Acrylic nails painted scarlet to match the color of her top, a silver ring adorned with a pearl on her right hand little finger and a gold ring with yellow topaz on the right hand index finger lent to the attire the right touch of femininity.

We wish she would get over the use of dark kaajal a eye makeup. Frankly, it makes her look like a raccoon and accentuates her already too boney face!

John Abraham- Neil Mukesh teamed?

John Abraham- Neil Mukesh teamed?
What's Kabir Khan up to these days? Post 'Kabul Express', one kept hearing that Kabir's working on his next film. Well, the cat is out of the bag. The director has had successful meetings with John Abraham and Neil Nitin Mukesh for his new venture.

“I keep talking to John regularly. Even when I wasn't working on the new film, I'd still talk to him about various things. Our conversations aren't work-specific. As for Neil, he's part of the Yash Raj family, so I keep bumping into him all the while. But, let me clarify, I haven't discussed work with either John or Neil,” Kabir informs me.

But Kabir is ready to make the big announcement soon. “Yes, we plan to start the film in summer, so ideally we should be ready with the cast by February-end,” he adds.

Rakesh Roshan will direct another 'Krissh' film

What will he direct next? Rakesh Roshan has more or less decided to make another super-hero film. "But we've to make sure that the screenplay goes beyond what we did in 'Koi…Mil Gaya' and 'Krissh'. And also all the other super-hero films that have come from Hollywood lately. The genre, I feel has been done to the optimum. The fight between a super-hero and a super-villain has to be pitched right. The content has to be really strong."
Hrithik had expressed a desire to play the super-villain. "But that is not possible," laughs Rakesh Roshan. "We need another big star to play the super-villain. The fight has to be evenly pitched." But before that in June, Rakesh Roshan starts his film with Anurag Basu. "He's very talented. I saw his 'Gangster' and 'Metro'. He definitely has a great script-sense."

Although the trailers of Rakesh Roshan's production, 'Krazzy 4' were supposed to start from Friday, enthusiastic exhibitors in Mumbai began screening the trailers from Wednesday. "I've had a tremendous response." Rakesh Roshan denies there was any problem between him and Shah Rukh during the item song that they shot for 'Krazzy 4' earlier this week. "There were two costumes to be changed, and we did them. He finished it with much grace. It's come out really well. Now Hrithik will be shooting the same song in February. But while Shah Rukh's version will be in the film, Hrithik's will be for the promotion and then in the end-titles."
Rakesh Roshan says 'Krazzy 4' has shaped up really well. "And I'm proud to say my daughter Sunaina is the co-producer. She attended all the shootings and was there hands-on in the project."
